Not being able to leave campus while on duty is, while inconvenient, not the worst thing. With a week’s worth of groceries and my bag well stocked with books and music, I’m content to spend the week up here.
The worst thing about being on duty is the phone. The phone is the reason why I can not leave campus when I am on duty. I have to keep the thing attached to me twenty-four seven and within range.
It can at anytime begin to ring, day or night, rain or shine. It could even begin to ring this very instant as I write this very sentence. And I would have to answer it and the, most likely, run up to residence to check someone in or let someone locked out of their room back in or answer a noise complaint.
(The irony is, this is about as far as I got when I got called by a woman wanting to extend her stay.)
It is the having to work your life around when this phone my ring. Try planning supper, or even a snack, around the check-ins, check-outs, those who want to stay another night or need a parking pass.
My arms tingle in anxiety, as I try to get to sleep at night, knowing that at any point in my REM cycle, I can be shocked awake.
This is the worst thing about being on duty.
