On Duty

I began my on-duty shift today. I work as a GSR (Guest Services Representative, not Gun Shot Residue) at the university’s residence because in summer they have guests staying there. Basically, I’m a glorified maid, as I occasionally get to do office work and give tours.

On one hand, it is not pleasant being on duty. When you’re on duty, you have to stay up here 24 a day for a whole week. It wouldn’t be so bad if I actually lived in res but I have lived ‘off the hill” (The university is on a Cranbrook Hill, so most anywhere off campus is off the hill) for three years now. And I have a cat.

But on the other hand, it can be relaxing. As I told Joe, my co-worker, I get to live a minimalist life style, which I enjoy. One pot, one set of dishes, no tv, no computer, unless I’m willing to walk down to the computer labs on campus. I get to read and I hope to make a dent in the reading list I recently started. (Which can be located at http://kimsbooklist.blogspot.com/, if you are interested.)
